What is MND SA?

The MND SA is an association very close to our hearts. They provide support and advocacy to some of our participants at SACARE.  On the 2nd August, SACARE is sponsoring the annual MND SA Gala Night. We spoke with the MND SA team to give everyone a little run down as to what the organisation is all about...

What is MND?

Motor neurone disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which neurones (which control the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow) fail to work normally. Muscles then gradually weaken and waste, as neurones degenerate and die. MND is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease in the US after a famous baseball player who died of the disease.

Who exactly are MND SA and how did you start?

MND SA was founded in 1985 and was established to offer support to people affected by motor neurone disease. Until then, there was no one to turn to, nowhere to go for help and support. From humble beginnings we have grown considerably and support people based anywhere in South Australia who have been diagnosed with MND.

In what ways do you support those with MND?

Our mission is to help reduce the impact of MND on people living with MND, their families and carers.
We do this by;
  1. Providing information and support services to South Australians affected by MND
  2. Sponsoring, encouraging and promoting research into causes, cure and treatment
  3. Promoting public awareness through community education and MND research
  4. Providing MND specific information and support to health and allied professionals

MND SA is a not-for-profit, non-government funded organisation and fundraising is our prime source of income. We want to see a world free of MND but in the meantime, MND SA will continue to provide the best possible care to clients and their loved ones.

How do you fundraise and how can people get involved?

We hold Major Fundraising events during the year, which attract a large percentage of the broader MND Community and businesses who provide their services and support to us. We encourage businesses to have “Morning Tea for MND”, schools to have a special day, for example casual days, or sausage sizzles to raise funds. We are happy to offer a special guest speaker to visit, individuals organise events of all types including “Freeze” events at their homes, quiz nights, sports clubs rally with group activities to fundraise and we are always open to new suggestions! We have had people hold garage sales, and donate the money made to MND SA. We love to see the photos from these events and in most cases publish them in our newsletters which we showcase our fundraising champions.
Donations and bequests are also very much appreciated. Read more details on how you can get involved here.

People can call us on 08 8234 8448 for more information or check out our website or you can like us on Facebook.
