6 tips to staying warm this winter

SACARE’s resident blogger Alice Waterman shares her hot tips on staying warm this winter.

Winter is well and truly here, and I hope you’ve been staying warm and dry in these cold wet months! It’s super important to maintain a positive mindset and embrace activities that bring joy and comfort to help navigate the cold weather with a smile. If you’re short on ideas, I’ve listed my six best ways to keep you and your loved ones happy during this winter season…

Indulge in your favourite foods.

One of my favourite ways to stay cosy in winter is sharing in my favourite foods, it’s the perfect time to treat yourself. If you love cooking as much as I do, whip up a dish that brings you joy and boosts your mental health. Prepare your favourite meals or desserts to add a touch of happiness and comfort to your winter days!

If cooking isn’t your thing, then gather your family and friends and venture out to your favourite local restaurants. Savouring delicious meals with the ones you love will not only warm your body but also nourish your soul, and hey, it’s always great to support local businesses.

Show love to your pets.

Don’t forget about your furry friends! If you must leave them home alone, make sure your pets are entertained, cosy, and safe. Keep them warm indoors away from the rain and consider getting them new toys to keep them engaged.

If you don’t have a pet, you can volunteer at local animal charities. Help ensure that these organisations have enough support to care for and feed their animals over winter. Helping these charities will provide comfort to the animals and give you a sense of fulfilment. See how you can help by clicking here!

Dive into movie marathons.

When the rain comes, why not dive into the delightful world of your favourite movies? Curl up under a blanket, sip on a warm beverage, and immerse yourself in captivating stories. Unwind and escape the chill outside with stories that make the winter days fly by!

Brighten up your space.

Do your surroundings need a makeover? Why not spend some time in the garden or around your home to brighten up your space? If the weather clears, add some new plants, flowers, or vegetables to your garden. A touch of green will beautify your outdoor space. If you’re stuck inside, start a new painting project, or even buy some paintings you love to make your space feel more vibrant and inviting. Brightening up your space this winter will boost your mood and keep you busy!

Spread the joy of giving.

Why not declutter and give back this winter? Go through your old clothes or unwanted items and donate them to people in need! Maybe a family member or friend would appreciate something you have no need for. The act of giving will warm your heart and create a ripple of positivity.

If you have nothing to give, offer your time to the elderly or people living with disability. Help out or simply have a friendly conversation to make sure they feel cared for and connected. An act of kindness will not only brighten their day but create a sense of warmth within yourself.

Stay engaged.

It can be tricky to stay engaged when the rain stops you from doing your daily activities outdoors. Make sure you challenge your mind and stay entertained by purchasing books or puzzles that can be done in the warmth of your home! You could even gather your family for a fun game, a bit of competition is always fun and will help melt the winter hours away.

Remember to be kind to yourself, your loved ones, and even your workmates this winter. Have a think about some of the points above, and how they can help bring warmth and happiness to your life during these cold months. Whether it’s enjoying delicious meals, engaging in hobbies, or spreading joy to others, there are countless ways to stay warm and happy during winter.

Let’s all embrace happiness and cosiness!!
