A Day in My Life: Sam from Briarholmam from Briarholm

When it comes to supporting our clients, SACARE know how to provide exceptional care and support. But what is our main point of difference? Our focus is on independence and lifestyle. Our support staff are not there to care and control, they are there to help and support.

This means supporting a client’s independence by letting decision making sit entirely with them. What they want to eat, what they want to do, what time they go to bed. This is their life and all decisions are theirs, we are just happy to be here to help when they need it.

What does this look like?

Lucky for us we have a series of guest bloggers who want to share their day, living in an sacare Supported Independent Living Accommodation, with you.

Sam has been living in Kingswood for a few years now, he is so excited to share his day with you…

I am Sam and I live at Briarholm, Kingswood AND also still call Mum and Dad’s place home too. Both are in walking distance so I generally cruise down in my electric wheelchair with staff. I’m lucky because I get the best of both worlds and sleep there on weekends but live in my own house during the week.

On the weekends staff make sure I am ready to go. The Support Workers I am familiar with come and provide the care I need whilst staying there. It makes it really enjoyable. I get to do the things I love with family like have a beer and help in the garden with Dad. He’s a legend. So is Mum.

Routine is important to me, I am an early bird, so my day starts by me yelling out to my team that I am ready to go and from there the routine starts! I like to wander around the house and see what everyone is up too through the day. We will usually do fun things like play connect 4 together and when I’ve had enough I cruise back to my room. In my room I listen to my favourite radio and music stations.

I love living at Briarholm because staff are nice, they take me to the places I want to go, and I get lots of choice with my food. The best thing is my team know me well enough to know what I love to do and make it happen! Aaron [Briarholm Team Leader] knows how much I love my cars and he took me and the boys to Tailem Bend races where I got to meet Craig Lowdes. I have a THRIVE program also so that is awesome. Its really great. I love living at Briarholm.
